What are the rules of entry?

Who is eligible to enter?

All businesses selling a retail product as their primary product with a physical or online store operating in the Australian market are eligible (see specific criteria for each award). The business must have been in operation for at least 6 months and continue to be in operation at 27 September 2017.
Entrants may:
- Have been born outside Australia;
- Currently reside outside Australia;
- Have entered or won this competition in previous years*; and
- Have entered or won similar competitions*.
*Previous Young Retailer of the Year winners are ineligible to re-enter. If your business has won an award for three consecutive years you will be entered into the Hall of Fame and will be ineligible to enter that award for the next 2 years.
Young Retailer awards category: 
- Entrants must be 25 years of age or under as at 31 December 2017 (born on or after 1 January 1992).
- Entrants must be working for a retail business operating in Australia, and should be still employed in the retail industry as at 27 September 2017.
- Entrants must be endorsed by a supervisor or company representative.
- Previous winners are ineligible to enter but previous entrants and finalists are encouraged to enter.

Do entrants have to be members of the National Retail Association (NRA)?

No. You do not need to be a member of the NRA to be eligible. We encourage all retailers to enter this inclusive industry competition.
We strongly recommend that you subscribe to receive updates so that you do not miss out on communications.
NRA members do receive discounted Gala ticket prices.

What does it cost to enter?

There is no charge to enter the awards, however we do recommend that all entrants attend the Gala ceremony (tickets priced from $199pp, discounts for tables).
All finalists receive one (1) complimentary ticket to attend the Gala ceremony.
All Young Retailer of the Year finalists receive one (1) complimentary ticket to the Young Retailer of the Year Lunch and one (1) complimentary ticket to the Gala ceremony.

How many awards can I enter?

In general, each outlet of your business counts as one entrant so if your company has multiple stores or franchises, you can enter every single location if you choose eg. John's Bakery Malvern, John's Bakery Blacktown,... It will mean that stores of the same company are competing against each other - but hey, healthy competition is a good thing, right?
Alternatively, you can just choose to submit your entry as your whole company, but this will mean that no individual locations may enter that same category eg. John's Bakery enters, therefore John's Bakery Blacktown cannot enter the same award.
Purely online retail businesses count as one entrant. Multichannel businesses cannot submit a separate entry for the online component of their business.

I've entered or won this award before, can I still enter?

Yes, you can enter awards that you have previously entered, placed or won, except previous winners of Young Retailer of the Year may not re-enter. Finalists are encouraged to re-enter, provided you still meet the entry requirements.
Note: Once you have won an award category three (3) consecutive years in a row, you will be entered into the National Retail Awards Hall of Fame and will be ineligible to enter that category for the next two years. Please contact us if you are unsure if this applies to you.


How does the judging work?

Once the awards portal closes for submissions on Friday 28 July, all entries will be reviewed and assessed by a panel of judges, comprised of industry leaders, academic researchers, retired professionals, and trained consultants. Judges are carefully screened and are not allowed to judge any category which presents a conflict of interest.


For all awards except Young Retailer of the Year, the top 5 finalists will be announced and notified by email on Monday 14 September.


The top 25 finalists of Young Retailer of the Year will be notified by email on Monday 14 September. The top 25 finalists will then undergo additional rounds of submissions and judging, culminating in the Gala ceremony where the top 10 finalists, runner-up and winner will be announced.


How do I submit my entry?

You must submit your entry/entries via the Online Awards Portal, which will be open for submissions from 9am Monday 12 June to 5pm Friday 28 July. Detailed instructions will follow soon.
We strongly recommend that you start to prepare your submission early, and do not leave it to the last moment to upload your entry.


How does the Retailer of the Year supreme award work?

The winners of each award in the Category Retailer of the Year and Champion awards will be assessed against each other, with one ultimate winner crowned as Retailer of the Year.
Sorry, winners of Individual awards are not eligible for this award.


How does the People's Choice Retailer of the Year work?

This year, we are pleased to announce the NEW People's Choice Retailer of the Year award. Every single entrant who submits an entry into the Category Retailer of the Year or Champion awards - regardless of whether you become a finalist - will have their business name placed into an online public voting portal.
Public voting opens on Monday 14 August and continues right up to the Gala. It's a very simple process - the entrant with the highest number of votes wins $5000 cash. We recommend that you promote your nomination to your team members, customers and brand fans, and keep an eye on your tallied votes.


If you enter multiple awards, you will only receive one listing in the online public voting portal (multiple award entries do not count as votes). Voters will be required to provide identification (eg. email, Facebook) and can only vote once. Businesses may not offer incentives for votes and entrants may be disqualified should their votes be unable to be verified.
